Transfer run with 35s |
Description: |
A transfer from elsewhere in Buffalo arrives at Buffalo Junction yard, seen from Elk St, behind a trio of 35 line units. It was getting unusual to see an SD 35 by this time, though several roads still ran them. |

Virginian had a line that went to Deepwater, on the Kanawha River, to interchange wtih the NYC. During a trip to chase C&O 614 in January of 1985, I lucked onto this run on the line. It was around 0730, really too early for much light there, but I took the shots I could. |

Headed west on the ex NKP |
Description: |
I didnt get to Buffalo much-living in NY City, it was 420 miles just to get there, a little out of reach for having one day off a week-so I did not get to see the action there or west. It was something of a novelty to see a train I had seen in Binghamton, now on the western leg of its journey. Heres AFOB, the Ayer Mass to Bellevue train, getting out of town for a run over the ex NKP to Ohio. It will be a quick trip. This shot also gives a good overview of the industrial part of the city, with grain elevators all along the lake front south of the city, demonstrating Buffalo's prominence as a grain milling center. The huge elevator taking up much of the right background was built by Continental Grain, and was the largest in the world at the time it was built. Continental was notable for being the biggest shipper on the NYC. The girder bridge just beyond the signals was the DLW City Branch, to its Buffalo passenger station. The open drawbridge in the distance is the ex NKP; the NS train will use the adjacent ex Buffalo Creek bridge, which was once owned owned jointly by the Erie and LV. |

Old but still running |
Description: |
Thte GP 38 was not much of a surprise. NS still had quite a few GP 35s and even a few 30s, as I would see shortly, working in local and yard service. One of the 35s is here at the shop. |

Big westbound |
Description: |
This westbound had 104 cars rolling through town on the ex NKP. We see it hitting the B&O diamond. Interestingly, the same power was on a westbound I shot in Buffalo a week earlier. |

Eastbound GEs |
Description: |
This eastbound behind a pair of new GEs was rolling 160 cars through Fort Wayne. The flat land the NKP ran through in the upper midwest really lent itself to long trains, and NS was not shy about running some moster consists. These two units are just starting from the signal, and their exhaust is shooting straight up. Once up to speed, it will be an easy ride. |
