PROVIDENCE RI TUNNEL |
Description: |
New Haven ALCO DL109 0728 emerges from the mile long New Haven RR tunnel under College Hill in Providence, RI with a fantrip originating in Boston. The tunnel was originally electrified when opened in 1908 and until the 1930's MU trains ran through on 15 minute headways. The tunnel has been closed for many years but a shorter tunnel the NH's RICO subsidiary built for trollies is still used for buses. I took the slide from the end of the mail and express sidings while waiting to board the fan trip at Union Station in May 1956. The trip would proceed to Worcester and then down the N&W line, then over to the "Valley" line to Saybrook and the Shoreline back. |
