3-foot gage. Baldwin Locomotive Company; a rare surviving steam locomtove equipped with Vaulcain Compound cylinders and valve gear. You can clearly see in this photo the lower, smaller-diameter high pressure cylinder. On top of it is the larger-diameter low pressure cylinder. To the left of the cylinders is the steam chest, which took the exhaust of the high pressure cylinder and routed it to the low pressure cylinder on the next stroke. Both cylinders acted upon the same crosshead, producing a larger cylinder thrust, and consequently higher drawbar pull for the locomotive. |
