ERIE 2-8-2 #3199
Title:  ERIE 2-8-2 #3199
Description:  This appears to be the builder's photo of this lone member of the N-3A class "Mikado" type locomotive. According to SteamLocomotive website, Number 3199 was built to use uniflow cylinders, which uses a long piston that admitted steam at each end as did standard double-acting piston designs but exhaust the steam at the center of the cylinder through ports. This in theory would avoid the temperature drop in the valve area that waste energy. The concept proved impractical and 3199 was rebuilt as a conventional locomotive. It was retired in 1950. There are no surviving Erie 2-8-2 "Mikado" type locomotives. Date is approximate

GN 2-8-2 #3351 - Great Northern
Title:  GN 2-8-2 #3351 - Great Northern
Description:  This is an excellent example of the ingenuity and frugality of the Great Northern shops. They rebuilt older articulated 2-6-6-2's into powerful, superheated 2-8-2 Mikados like this one. GN 2-8-2 #3368 - Great Northern
Title:  GN 2-8-2 #3368 - Great Northern
Description:  The Great Northern was a frugal railroad who had their shops re-use and rebuild older models of locos into newer efficient designs like this 2-8-2 Mikado from an older L-6 class 2-6-6-2 loco. Starting in 1925, the older articulateds were transformed into powerful and efficient 2-8-2 Mikados. Specs - class O-6, 56" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 28x32" cylinders, engine weight of 320,100 lb, tractive effort of 76,160 lb. No date was given for the photo so an approximate one was used. GN 2-8-2 #3369 - Great Northern
Title:  GN 2-8-2 #3369 - Great Northern
Description:  Left with a large number of 2-6-6-2 that had been replaced by stronger models in 1925-26, the Great Nothern shops cut, whittlled, and reshaped these massive locos into beefy 2-8-2 Mikados like this GN #3369. The new group of Mikados were reclassified as O-6 members. They were rebuilt again into class O-8 specs between 1944-46 and renumbered #3394. Retired in mid-1950's and all were scrapped by the early 1960's. The date of 1939 was given but from the photo, it appears to be missing its main rod so it may be several years before it was rebuilt to O-8 class specs.Unknown photographer.

GN 2-8-2 #3390 - Great Northern
Title:  GN 2-8-2 #3390 - Great Northern
Description:  This is another example of the ingenuity of the Great Northern Shops who could take an older, slow moving, odd 2-6-8-0 articulated loco and rebuild it into a powerful and fast 2-8-2 Mikado like this GN #3390. Starting in 1926-28, the Shops converted the M-2 class of 2-6-8-0's into the O-7 class but then rebuilt and redesigned them in 1944-46 again into even more powerful O-8 class of Mikados. Specs - class O-7, 69" drivers, 210 psi boiler pressure, 31x32" cylinders, engine weight of 348,000 lb, impressive tractive effort of 79,554 lb. The loco was retired and scrapped sometime between March and May of 1958. No date was given for the photo so an approximate one was used. No photographer was listed for the photo although it may have been Robert Graham.
