| Description: |
Three months after Amtrak began running trains, it sent United Aircraft TURBOTRAIN set 50/51 on a nationwide tour to show Americans what the future of passenger travel would look like. Things didn't quite work out the way Amtrak showed us, but here was Paul Oliver in font of power car 50 while the train was on display at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. The gold stripes on the train were actually black SCOTCHLITE, and the young woman on the left was wearing a purple SMILE A WHILE ON THE TURBOTRAIN sticker. The train had just arrived on the Southern Railway and left two days later on the Southern Pacific, and several of us got to ride it to Lafayette. Illinois Central coach 2504 had been built in October 1946 as Chicago & Eastern Illinois 463 VERMILLION TRAIL and was purchased by the IC in 1961. |

Looking like a combination of an ocean ship and a wing-stripped airplane, the TurboTrain was an interested and unusual experiment. Built by United Aircraft of Canada, this was a high speed gas-turbine sleek even had the first ever tilting mechanism in the US for cornering curves. Although distinctive in design, there were lingering problems with the overall service and Amtrak finally pulled them from revenue service in 1976. No photographer was listed for the 620 film sized photo. |

Early in 1978, while on a business trip to Washington, DC, CKF took this Tri-X Pan exposure from a northbound Amtrak. It is of a recently retired TurboTrain (#57). Originally ordered by Montreal Locomotive Works for Canadian National in 1966 (delivered 1971?), this was one of two train sets cobbled together of leftover CN sets in 1973 for Amtrak (to compliment the sets they already owned). It ran in Boston to New York service and was powered by United Aircraft (Sikorsky) gas-turbine engines. |

Some are preserved and some are now thought to be in iran and possibly North Africa. The SNCF T2000 RTG sets were themself developed from the SNCF T1000/T1500 ETG ("Element a Turbine a Gaz") trainsets first converted from an SNCF X4300 class DMU in 1967. The 1968-1973 production sets had 4 cars with the T1000 car containing the gas turbine and the T1500 car containing the diesel engine. The last SNCF T1000/T1500 ETG sets were retired in January 2001. Both types ran all over France. |
