BNSF 7454 and CN 5606 |
Description: |
A CN through freight, led by an interesting foreign visitor, parallels Hwy. 41 and passes the Hwy. G overpass as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Snells, WI on 4 May '18. Snells, formerly known as Snell’s Station or Snell’s Crossing, is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. This small, rural community once included a post office, depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone. The former SOO rails can be seen on this side of the train. |

CN 5286 |
Description: |
A CN local bisects the intersection of W. College Ave./Hwy. 125 with S. Memorial Dr./N. Richmond St./Hwy. 47 (probably the busiest intersection, consequently busiest grade crossing, in Appleton) as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 5 May '18. The interesting brick building behind the train is Good Company, a restaurant established in 1980. The building was built between 1895 and '01 by the Marshall Paper Co., a.k.a. Marshall Bros. Wholesale Paper or Marshall Bros. Paper. The company was founded in '93 by Simon and Samuel G. Marshall, father and son. It initially operated across Richmond St. at the Marshall & Hammel grain facility (Simon was a partner in that company) until the current building was completed. Samuel's brothers Louis J. and Harry M. later joined the company, whose products included wrapping paper and printing paper. It used to receive rail service, the spur was on the north (far) side of the building. That spur crossed Richmond St. and serviced the Marshall & Hammel Grain Elevator & Warehouse that stood where the Walgreen's parking lot is now. Louis J., the last surviving brother, sold the company when he retired in 1942. |

Description: |
A CN local bisects the intersection of W. Franklin St. and N. Division St. as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 5 May '18. The facility at left is the former Furnishings Unlimited warehouse. The historic address of the facility is 323 N. Clark St. The current business address is 311 N. Superior St.; the address probably changed after an addition was added to the northeast end of the facility after 1981. The building was likely erected by the Cohen Bros. Fruit Co., after a natural gas explosion destroyed their previous facility ca. 10 Sep. 1948. Furnishings unlimited acquired the facility in or prior to ‘81. The building had painted signs for Cohen Bros. and Sunkist until at least ‘81. The facility used to receive rail service, but it hasn't for quite some time. The most recent occupant is, or was, Appleton Furniture Direct. The building in the background is Oneida Heights, 525 N. Oneida St., an apartment complex for seniors. It was built upon the site of several historic, rail served industries near the site of the C&NW depot. Train was headed back to Neenah after working Little Chute and Kaukauna. |

The interesting, old commercial or industrial building at right is 302 S. Story St. It has a sign painted on its front proclaiming it The Train Station. I haven’t been able to find any relevant information regarding its historic or current use. The grass in the foreground was home to the historic Pierce Manufacturing plant that occupied this city block from 1917 until it was razed in 2011. This plot of land has been divided into lots for Habitat for Humanity and some homes have sprung up to partially obscure the view. |

CN 5286 |
Description: |
A CN local passes Intertape Polymer Group (IPG), 741 4th St., Menasha, WI, and approaches De Pere St. (the current street signs have been lazily bastardized to Depere St.) via former SOO rails at Menasha, WI on 6 May '18. Founded in Menasha in Dec. 1917 as George Banta Paper Co., an affiliate of the George Banta Publishing Co. They merged with Menasha’s Gebrick Paper Co. in ’19 and continued under the Banta name. The name was changed to Central Paper Products Co. (later shortened to Central Paper Co.) ca. Sep. ’20, about the same time they moved to their new location at 422 Manitowoc St., on the north side of the joint MILW/SOO railroad tracks. It’s the same facility, but the addressed changed when a portion of Manitowoc St. was vacated to allow westward expansion ca. ’76-’80. George Banta, Sr. continued on as President; George, Jr., assumed the role in ’35 after his father passed away. The facility was acquired by Alco Standard Corp., based in Valley Forge, PA, ca. 29 Sep. ’69 but continued to operate as Central Paper. The name changed to Central Products Co. at some point after ’74. Spinnaker Industries, Inc. purchased Central Products Co. from Alco ca. 1 Jul. ‘95. Intertape Polymer Group, Inc., from Canada, purchased Central Products from Spinnaker ca. 12 Apr. ’99. You don't see 6-axle units on this line very often, the last time I photographed one was 11 Aug. '14. Looking east from De Pere St., I was standing at the approximate site where the MILW rails crossed De Pere St. |

A CN local works in the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 6 May '18. You don't see 6-axle units on this line very often, the last time I photographed one was 11 Aug. '14. It is awesome to see this many cars in the yard, it doesn't look like this very often these days. The facility at right is currently home to Alliance Industries, 320 Appleton St., Menasha, WI, they apply powder coatings and manufacture sand cores. Founded at Waupaca, WI in 1979, they leased this facility in 2005. They later purchased the facility as well as the adjacent one at 313 Appleton St. The facility was home to Menasha Mill Supply Co. from at least 1939 through the 1970s, they primarily processed waste paper. It clearly used to receive rail service, but it does not seem to currently. The former MILW yard was located on the other (south) side of it; the building could be serviced by both railroads simultaneously. |

View from the bridge |
Description: |
The new Cheri Whitlock Dr overpass in Siloam Springs. The new bridge was opened several months ago, replacing the grade crossing here. There had not been any accidents that I am aware of, but a train passing did tie up traffic for a while, and anyone turning in or out of Country Club Dr could have a long wait in the aftermath of a train. We see the southbound H train about to pass under with 101 cars and a DPU. |

The DPU on the southbound H train pushes the 101 cars south. The new bridge has some wire issues on the south side, so you need to work around them. At least they are not on the north side of the bridge, allowing a clear view of a southbound train. You just have to work around the chain link fence. |
