Amtrak 63 "Maple Leaf" |
Description: |
There was track work going on under the signal bridge at CP 308 on the CSX Rochester Subdivision. Many trains were stopped at different locations. Amtrak 63 was the first train to go through the work site at CP 308 at 10 mph. Once the Maple Leaf cleared, CSX NF Dispatcher changes all signals in the area to clear. Track workers cleared the line and left about an hour later. |

PRR Westbound Freight, 1965 |
Description: |
Wye Switches. Here is an original telephoto view that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train in Duncansville, Pennsylvania, during late November of 1965. Shown here are two unidentified GM-EMD "F" units pulling a string of new H-43B 100-ton hopper cars. They are passing WYE Tower on their way up the Allegheny Mountains via the Muleshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. This is the actual New Portage Junction: the original PRR main line from Altoona (on the left) merges here with the original right-of-way of the Allegheny Portage Railroad. |

TPPX 70048 woodchip gondola was part of the consist of a CN through freight crossing Kampo Rd. (out-of-frame to right) as it headed northeast via a remnant of the former C&NW main line (now relegated to a passing siding) at Neenah, WI on 24 May '18. The former SOO main line runs parallel on this side of the train. Thilmany Pulp and Paper Co., founded in 1883, became Expera Specialty Solutions on 26 Jun. '13. |

Description: |
A CN container train crosses Winchester Rd./Hwy. II, crosses Ehlers Rd., and approaches the Hwy. 41 overpass as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI until 14 Apr. '16) on 5 Mar. '17. Train had two locomotives, CN 2812 and CN 3007. The first highway bridge over the then SOO railroad tracks here was built when Hwy. 41 was relocated to what was then the rural outskirts of the Fox Cities. The project commenced in the late-1930s and continued into the 1940s. The relocation allowed for expansion to a 4-lane highway (‘superhighway’ or ‘belt line’), as well as bypassing the congestion of the downtowns of Neenah, Menasha, and Appleton. On 18 Apr. ’36, the State Highway Commission of Wis. authorized “construction of an overhead bridge in Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., on the proposed route of U.S. Highway 41.” The overpass project was referred to as the Neenah Belt Line Overhead. |

A CN local heads southwest via the former joint MILW/SOO rails at Menasha, WI on 27 May '18. Locomotive is just coming off of the swing bridge over the Fox River Navigation Canal and is crossing one of four diamonds which remain on this mostly industrial island (formed when the canal was excavated). Local was headed back to Neenah. The facility which dominates the scene is currently home to Simply Incredible Foods, 198 River St., Menasha, WI. They purchased the defunct Menasha Municipal Utilities plant in Jun. '14. The track in the foreground originates at the former C&NW main line (behind me) and is used to service U.S. Paper Mills Corp. on Washington St. |

Description: |
A CN local shoves its train into the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 27 May ‘18. The Edward Smith Octagon House, 347 Smith St., stands at left. The house was erected between 1851 and 1854. Edward Smith, who operated a flour mill and had an early interest in the Neenah Paper Co., purchased the home in 1855. It is commonly referred to as the Hiram Smith Octagon House; Hiram purchased it from his brother Edward at some point. It has been owned by the Neenah Historical Society since 1993. The powers-that-be wanted to demolish it to make way for the over-priced and over-budget Main St. overpass (out of frame to left). Thankfully there were enough intelligent people around to save it. Some references claim that the historic structure was not moved, but that the overpass design was modified to accommodate it. Other references state that the house was moved, including an article from the local newspaper on 15 Apr. ‘98 which stated, “federal rail safety funds will cover 90% of the additional $200,000 needed to move the historic Octagon House, 336 Main St., about 500 feet east to the corner of Smith and Torrey streets.” If it was moved, it wasn’t moved quite that far. The process of trying to move the house dragged on for at least 3 years. An article in the local newspaper on 18 Oct. ’01 stated that the relocation was still going to happen, but the estimated cost to move it had tripled by that point. Regardless of whether it was moved or remains at its original site, I’m just glad that it was saved. |

A CN through freight approaches S. Perkins St. while headed northeast through past the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 3 Jun. '18. Train had two locomotives, CN 5744 and GECX 7388 (former CSX). Until recently, the building at right had a sign denoting its use by All About Packaging, Inc., Warehouse #2 (the dark rectangle above the service door shows where the sign was). There is a spur along the south side of the building, but the turnout for the spur was removed years ago. The oldest part of the building was completed in Mar. '60, the new facility for the Fox Valley Sheltered Workshop. Inc. (started in '55 to create employment opportunities for the disabled). It became Valley Packaging Industries Inc. ca. mid- or late-'80s. After they moved to a new facility, this one has been home to Valley Planing Mill, Inc., followed by Perfect Patterns, Inc. |
