Niles I. Here is the fourth of 11 original photos by George Niles, Jr., that were taken at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, perhaps during 1952. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #8798 and #8507. Both are ES-15M road switchers built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #8798 was built in January of 1952, while #8507 is was built in August of 1952. They are serving as helpers for a mail and express train that's rounding the Curve on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they will uncouple and return to Altoona for yet another helper run up "The Mountain." Also visible is PRR/Railway Express Service cabin car #5010. |

17th Street. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train in Altoona, Pennsylvania, during the Spring of 1960. Shown here are PRR engines #8608 and #8610. Both are APS-24MS's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 2,400 horsepower each. #8608 was built in 1955, but #8610 was built in 1956. They are pushing a westbound mail/express train under the 17th Street Bridge. Also visible is N-5 Caboose #5010, for mail/express service only. The words under the number "5010" are as follows: "ASSIGNED TO PASSENGER SERVICE // RAILWAY EXPRESS AGENCY" |
