KCS F3A 30 was 30 years old when it was photographed at Deramus Yard, but its career wasn't nearly over! It was a cab unit from one of two F3AB sets (30, 31) purchased for passenger service in November 1947, thus the two headlights and the water filler hatch under the first "S" in Kansas. Supplemented by two F7AB sets (32, 33) in 1949, all of these units lost their status as primary passenger power when E8A's 26-29 arrived 1952. The 30 was renumbered 4050 a few months after this photo and was later rebuilt into a slug with the same number. It was out of service on the KCS in June 1988, at the age of 41; but was sold to the Kiamichi Railroad where it was renumbered SL-2. After being retired by the KRR, it was scrapped. |
