A 118-car transfer run from the Seaboard System to the Union Pacific has just changed crews at the Central Avenue grade crossing, and is about to begin climbing the Huey P. Long Bridge. The yellow UP Suburban on the left had just delivered the train's new crew. Carryalls from most of the city's railroads were a common sight here in the days before contract crew haulers and new interchange locations. The train had UP SD40-2 3251 and MP SD40 3076 with 118 cars, of which 84 were auto racks; so it was a VERY long train. The red tank car on the left was the New Orleans Public Belt's fire car for the bridge. |
