When completed in 1889, the bridge at Poughkeepsie was the longest cantilever span in the US and second in the world to only the great Firth of Forth Bridge in Scotland. By comparison to the Forth bridge, the structure of the Poughkeepsie bridge is incredibly light and spindly.
