Signal Bridge at Carmi
At one time the L&N and NYC ran through Carmi, Illinois with this structure carrying the signals that guarded the junction where the Dixie Line headed for Evansville IN and the Central's "Egyptian" line continued north to Danville IL. NS took over the former NYC portion from Conrail in 1982 and operated it through 1988. The structure serves no real purpose now, there is only one set of tracks and it's operated as 'dark territory' by Evansqille Western.

Wendy Crim General Whoops...I was trying to ask what "dark territory" meant. Nothing runs there, I assume? 10/25/2011 2:07:12 PM
Rick Morgan General Dark territory means there are no signals to control traffic, all ops are by radio, timetable or warrant. 11/8/2011 12:54:08 PM
Alan Fricker General I suggest that the structure's purpose now is to remind us of the past and how important the railorad was once upon a time. 12/25/2016 8:31:08 PM
