Another Hoosier loco! This 1906 Alco-Richmond built 4-4-2 "Atlantic type" locomotive poses next to the elevated gate tower in downtown Hammond, IN. This loco was one of only twenty 4-4-2 Atlantics to ever appear on the C&O roster but they did hold on for decades with thirteen of them remaining in use until 1949. Specs - class A-16, 73" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 21x26" cylinders, engine weight of 173,000 lb and tractive effort of 27,073. The class was rebuilt in 1920's with reduced boiler pressure but increased cylinder size. Net effect was the tractive effort remained largely the same. Happy to be able to post a C&O loco serving my Hoosier state!Arthur B. Johnson photo |
