Coaling Tipple. Here is an original photo that I took of the Pennsylvania Railroad's coaling tipple in East Altoona, Pennsylvania, in October of 1965. Visible here is the covered area where loaded coal cars were emptied of their contents. The coal was then hauled up to the top of the coaling tower and dumped via wheeled buckets that were pulled by cables. Note the string of "Yellow Dot" 100-ton hopper cars a bit further back. Brush Mountain dominates the distance. |
