Strange as it is, this locomotive's history traces a lot of the origins of CSX. Originally built by EMD in November of 1951 as ACL GP7 #225, it moved onto the SCL roster as #845. While on the SCL roster, it was rebuilt as GP16 and renumbered SCL #4724. Next it merged into the SBD roster as their #1770. Eventually it fell under the CSX heading as 1770 seen here wearing the SCL/LN Family Lines logo. Eventually itt was sold out of the CSX roster to Decatur Jnctn Rwy as their #1608 and then resold to Pioneer Rail GP16 #1608 where it is today. To add another segment of the CSX story, the loco behind #1770 also brings in the C&O faction into the CSX mix. An unknown photographer took this "historical" photo. |
