Madison Mine #1, engineer's side view
Title:  Madison Mine #1, engineer's side view
Description:  Madison Mine, a Baldwin S-12 switcher, was in the former C&O yards at Huntington, WV in early 1980 (before March, certainly). The reason why this Baldwin was in the C&O yards is unknown to me. C&O 8248 hovers in the background. The cloudy sky obscures the stark black and white of the engine, lettering, and white stripe along the side sill.

Description:  It takes a lot of power to pull trains through the New River Gorge. This westbound train of empty hoppers is taking extra power to Handley for those eastbound loaded trains. (date not exact)
