PNC SD18m 1801 |
Description: |
Precision National SD18m 1801 on the BN at Clyde, Illinois on an unknown day in October 1979, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in October 1959 as Southern SD24 2503 (c/n 25599) on EMD Order 5606, it was renumbered to Southern 6301. It was acquired by PNC during 1978, leased as PNC 6301 for a while, then sent to the Milwaukee Road for rebuilding. The turbocharger was removed, the dynamic brakes were de-activated, and it was returned to PNC as a 1800 horsepower SD18m, numbered in the 1800 series (the horsepower), and retaining the last two digits of it's last Southern road number. It was leased to the BN for about a year, then went to the C&NW as 6623, then WSOR 1801, then AGPX 1801. |

PNC SD18m 1801 |
Description: |
Precision National SD18m 1801 on the BN at Clyde, Illinois, November 1979, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in October 1959 as Southern SD24 2503 (c/n 25599) on EMD Order 5606, it was renumbered to Southern 6301. It was sold to PNC during 1978 and put into PNC's lease pool. During 1979, PNC began having its ex-Southern SD24's rebuilt and de-turbocharged. The first five were rebuilt by the Milwaukee Road at the Milwaukee, Wisconsin Shops. All the other PNC ex-Southern SD24's were rebuilt by Morrison Knudsen. The rebuilt SD18m's were renumbered into the 1800 series reflective of their new horsepower rating, and all were leased to the BN for about a year or so. Note the blanked over dynamic brake blisters and lack of turbocharger bulge. This unit went on to become C&NW 6623, WSOR 1801, AGPX 1801. |
