L&N Train No. 12 |
Description: |
Louisville & Nashville 4-6-2 number 263 brings Ocean Springs commuter train No. 12 across Canal Street. The train is dead-heading from Julia Street Yard into Canal Street Station where it will load passengers for its 5:15 P.M. departure. The 263 was the last of 18 K-4B class Pacifics (246-263) constructed at the railroad's South Louisville Shops between 1920 and 1922. It was built in 1922 and retired on 7 July 1953. On 27 July 1951, just one month after this photo was taken, train No. 12 was officially dieselized with new FP7's.This photo was taken from the pedestrian walkway to the Mississippi River ferry landing, just off to the left. The two tracks on the left are the New Orleans Public Belt main lines, the three tracks in the middle belong to the L&N, and the tracks on the right – on Delta Street – belong to the Southern Pacific.
