Album Info:Caltrain operates one of the busiest commuter routes on the west coast. With up to a dozen trains an hour, there is lots of action. Added to the mix are trains from Amtrak, Altamont Corridor Express, and Union Pacific. This album includes photos throughout the second half of 2022.

Description:  Amtrak 159 leads the southbound Coast Starlight into the station at San Jose. The train is running three minutes late today, an impressive feat for the "Starlate," which can be upwards of an hour late on many occassions. The P42DC was built in 2001 by General Electric, and is one of over 200 such units owned by Amtrak. They are the backbone of Amtraks long distance fleet, but are being phased out of service by new Siemens ALC-42 locomotives.

Description:  Caltrain 900 leads a southbound local into San Jose. The 1985-built F40PH winds down the track-three lead, and will make a brief stop before continuing south. Caltrain 900 was built in 1985, and is the class unit of an order for 18 F40PH-2s built by EMD. 13 of these units were rebuilt with Caterpillar HEP generators, and 900 is one of these engines.

Title:  Operation Lifesaver Unit 203
Description:  Amtrak 203 idles at San Jose with the southbound Coast Starlight. The P42DC is painted in a unique commemorative scheme honoring the 50th anniversary of Operation Lifesaver. For a period spanning most of July 2022, the engine was assigned to the Coast Starlight service between Los Angeles and Seattle. Despite being the trailing unit for the entirety of its west coast jaunt, it was still an interesting catch for area railfans.

Description:  MP36 926 shoves a northbound 500 train out of Diridon. The exhaust of the 16 cylinder EMD 645 engine distorts the view of the overhead catenary converging at the throat tracks. At the north end of the station, Southern Pacific-style "tri-lights" guard the control point. The tri-lights would be gone just weeks later, part of Caltrains modernization plan. This plan will also see the MP36s bumped from mainline service, relegated to services to and from Gilroy.

Description:  Capitol Corridor 2104 shoves out of San Jose Diridon in late July. The SC-44 Charger was built in the mid 2010s as part of an order by several state departments of transport for state-operated Amtrak services. The California units are unique in that they have a raised ferring on the rear of the unit to help streamline the height differential between the top of the unit and the bi-level California Cars.

Description:  Caltrain 911 shoves northbound out of Santa Clara at about 1:50 PM. This train, #511 Limited, is running right on time, and will arrive in San Fran in just over an hour. In the August 2021 schedule, 17 of these '500' Limited trains operated between San Jose and San Francisco during off-peak hours, substitued by '300' and '400' trains during the morning and afternoon rushes.
