Here is page six of a six-page camera study celebrating the Pennsylvania Railroad's "Centipede" locomotives. It was published originally in the May-June 1973 issue of "PC Railroader" magazine, page 28. Here are four running-gear photos taken of a pair of semi-permanently coupled "Centipedes": #5816 and #5828. Both are BH-50's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works and rated at 2,500 HP each. #5816 was built in November 1947 and retired in September of 1962, whereas #5828 was built in November of 1948 and retired in April of 1962. |

CN 2985 and CN 3011 |
Description: |
A CN container train parallels Harrison St. and approaches the former Byrd Ave. grade crossing as it heads southwest past the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 19 May '18. A fellow train nut and I were enjoying an evening picnic (tasty vittles from the nearby Tom's Drive In) on the tail gate of his pickup truck, waiting to photograph passing trains. This train approaches, we grab our cameras, start shooting, and start to wonder why the engineer is laying on the horn. As our gaze follows the train as it passes us, we notice the reason for the horn. A moronic, trespassing, fat, old, grotesquely-bulging-spandex-clad, ersatz Lance Armstrong is dragging his bicycle across the tracks at the former Byrd Ave. grade crossing, right in front of the rapidly approaching freight train. When the engineer blew the horn, the moron flipped off the train crew and offered us a smug, arrogant grin while we stared in disbelief as he waddled away. |

Description: |
A CN local returns to the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 20 May '18. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, it stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished. |

Description: |
A CN unit train of 3-bay covered hoppers parallels Hwy. 41 and approaches the Hwy. G overpass as it heads southwest via former SOO rails at Snells, WI on 20 May '18. Snells is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. A Post Office was established on 4 May 1876, originally called Snell’s Station, sometimes referred to as Snell’s Crossing. This once small, rural community included a depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. It does not look like any substantial remnants of the community remain, even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone (it is not a station on the CN system map). The unit train of tank cars at right rests upon the former C&NW main line. Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 are partially visible in the background at left. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished. |
